2025 Thanksgiving Blue Bags with San Miguel School

On November 22nd, the spirit of solidarity and compassion filled San Miguel School in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago. Volunteers, teachers, administrators, and community members came together with a shared purpose: to support local families and ensure they felt cared for during the holiday season.

Through this collective effort, 100 families were served blue bags filled with Thanksgiving trimmings and a turkey. The event was more than a distribution; it was a reflection of the strength and unity that exists when a community shows up for one another. From packing to organizing to greeting families with warmth and respect, every role played that day contributed to an atmosphere of dignity and care.

San Miguel School served as a hub of activity and hope. Volunteers worked side by side with school staff and community partners, efficiently packing bags while sharing conversations and smiles. The teamwork on display highlighted the deep connections between the school and the families it serves, as well as the broader Back of the Yards community.

This year’s event carried additional significance. Amid the current fears and uncertainties many Latino communities are facing, safety and accessibility were top priorities. Recognizing that some families might feel hesitant to gather or travel, a group of dedicated volunteers stepped forward to deliver blue bags directly to families’ homes. This act of service ensured that no family was left without support and reaffirmed a powerful message: you are not alone, and your community stands with you.
